Guide to Treating Acne Scars and Skin Damage

You may need more than one kind of treatment to smooth your skin. Most are done in the doctor’s office or as an outpatient procedure at the hospital.

Skin resurfacing. The goal is to remove damaged layers of skin so that new, healthy skin appears. There are three major ways your doctor can do this:

  • Laser. A laser creates a more even surface to your skin.
  • Dermabrasion. A rapidly spinning wheel with a rough surface removes damaged skin.
  • Chemical peel. A special type of acid removes the top layer of your skin. This can help with deeper scars.
New skin will begin to form about 7 to 10 days after resurfacing. The area may stay pink from several weeks to several months.

Fillers. Your doctor puts a filler (collagen or fat) into the damaged area with a needle. It puffs up the skin under the scar to help smooth it out. Because your body slowly absorbs the filler, the process needs to be repeated from time to time.

Rolling (or needling). The doctor rolls a device covered in tiny needles over your skin. It’s a safe way to stimulate the tissue under it to grow. You may have to do it several times.

Surgery. Some people need an operation to remove bad acne scars or cysts. Your doctor cuts away or loosens the scars. The area is then repaired with stitches or a skin graft (skin from another area of the body).

Do take note that WebMd is one of the top healthcare sites in the world. Its’ ranked as the 2nd most popular site under the health category -

Step 2: Consult a Skin Specialist or Visit an Aesthetic Clinic

If your acne scars don't fade away on their own, it may be time to consider booking an appointment with your dermatologist or your local aesthetic clinic.

Who do you consult? An aesthetic doctor or a dermatologist? If you do a Google search for acne treatment, the search results are mixed with sites from aesthetic clinics and dermatologist clinics.

Aesthetic doctors, or sometimes called aesthetic physicians by the public, are general practitioner medical doctors who have a special interest in aesthetic medicine. Besides offering aesthetic procedures, some aesthetic doctors combine their practice with general practice (GP).

On the other hand, dermatologists are doctors who specialise in the field of treating skin diseases. After graduating medical school, they further pursue courses in dermatology.

Many dermatologists nowadays also offer aesthetic procedures such as dermal fillers and the various laser treatments at their clinics.

According to the guidelines by the Singapore Medical Council, aesthetic practice is not regarded as a specialty or subspecialty. The use of the title of aesthetic plastic surgeon or aesthetic dermatologist or aesthetic physician is therefore not allowed.

For the avoidance of doubt:
(a) A doctor who is a Dermatologist or Plastic Surgeon and who provides and performs aesthetic procedures should only employ the title or designation of “Dermatologist” or “Plastic Surgeon” respectively;
(b) A doctor who is a General Practitioner / Family Physician and who provides and performs aesthetic procedures should only employ the title or designation of General Practitioner / Family Physician, as the case may be

So how do you move forward? Should you see a General Practitioner or a Dermatologist?

I would suggest that you short-list the doctors based on the following considerations:
  • How much experience he has with acne scar treatment.
  • Referrals from reliable doctors and friends, and check out relevant reviews.
  • Your actual experience during the consultation. Your doctor should have your best interest at heart and not to see you as just another dollar sign. Did your doctor take a genuine interest in your problem? Was he or she un-rushed and thorough?  Acne scar treatment is not a one size fits all. The best outcomes usually result from a combination of different methods, individualised to your skin type and scar.

Acne Scar Treatment: CO2 Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing at Tiffiny Yang Aesthetics & Surgery
Due to my genetics misfortune, I’ve had the worst acne breakouts since my teenage years, which has spread into my adult life with quite widespread scarring on my face. Some bloggers can post photos of their beautiful face to get more readers, while others like myself have to post beautiful food photos instead. Well, at least I get to eat a lot while I’m at it.
I finally decided to do something about the scarring on my face, partly also due to the increasing number of live media exposures that I am required to do.
An old friend of mine recommended me to Dr. Tiffiny Yang to consult on what can be done about it. Do note that it -is- spelt ‘Tiffiny’ and not ‘Tiffany’ for the more observant readers.

Tiffiny Yang Aesthetics - Fractional CO2 treatment
YAYYY after months of waiting with abated breath, finally got the go-ahead to do the fractional CO2 treatment at Tiffiny Yang Aesthetics clinic. Previously, Dr Shiau advised against the treatment as my pimples were still not completely dried up and doing it will make things worse. But since the pimples cleared up and only scars are left, I am finally approved to do the fractional CO2 treatment!! :-) I have been waiting for this day since forever. Let me tell you why I'm so excited about this treatment.

I Had A Procedure For Acne Scars And Regretted It The Next Day
It was only six years ago that my skin stopped flaring up but, of course, the scars remain. So when I was asked to review an aesthetic treatment that purportedly treats scars, I was ecstatic...
Before Dr Lam from Ageless Medical Centre proceeded with the treatment, she briefed me on the technology behind it – it involves using a microneedle, which delivers radiofrequency waves that, in turn, selectively destroys the oil gland...

Acne Scar Treatment: CO2 Laser + TCA Results after 5 Sessions
Do note that again, it takes time for results and there is a resting period of 1 month between each session. So 5 sessions of CO2 laser treatment will take you 5 months at least to finish the procedure and see revealing results. Before we go into the actual results, I want to show the downtime and redness that occurs after each treatment so you have a fair idea of what to expect after a treatment and whether you want to show your face to the world...

Acne Scar Treatment in Singapore
Acne scar treatment in Singapore as told by a doctor with no affiliations. On this occasion, I also had the pleasure of picking the brains of my dermatologist colleague, Dr Yew.
Why am I writing this post? Primarily because I’m that clichéd long-time acne sufferer myself, with a vested interest in this kind of stuff...

    Edge Fractional CO2 Laser Singapore

    What is Edge Fractional CO2?
With the latest generation of Fractional CO2 Lasers, the Edge Pulse was introduced. This Edge Fractional CO2 Laser treatment solves the problem of traditional Fractional CO2 Laser treatments by greatly reducing the downtime associated with the treatment. Conventional Fractional CO2 Laser treatments usually caused patients to have redness for 3 days and scabs for 1 week. This latest Edge Fractional CO2 Laser gets around this problem by producing very fine beams that cause minimal redness and scabs that are so fine that they are barely noticeable. In fact, what most patients experience is that the skin is just slightly red for less than a day, and there are no rough scabs formed. Results can be seen as soon as after 1 treatment for most patients although most patients will need subsequent sessions for optimal results.

    Infini Laser Cost Singapore

Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling treatments, such as the Venus Viva and INFINI system use small needles to deliver heat energy to the skin. This stimulates collagen production and acne scar remodelling.

RF microneedling is ideal for rolling, atrophic, mixed, and tethered scars. Healing time is quicker than lasers – often within 48 hours. There’s also less chance of hyperpigmentation. Improvements are expected up to 6 months post-treatment.

Radiofrequency microneedling cost in Singapore: Infini costs about $1000 – $2500/session in Singapore. 1 – 2 sessions are normally recommended.
